At Madison Veterinary Hospital, we occasionally perform surgical procedures to support your pet’s long-term health or provide life-saving care when it’s needed most. Below are some of the common surgeries we offer.

 

Routine Reproductive Surgeries

Ovariohysterectomy (Spay – removal of ovaries and uterus in females)

Castration (Neuter – removal of testicles in males)

Benefits include preventing unwanted litters, improving hormonal driven behaviors and reducing risk of certain cancers.

 

Mass Removal (Tumor Removal)

Removal of benign growths like Lipomas (fatty-tumors), moles and cysts

Removal and biopsies of potential cancerous tumors

Early removal tumor is small provides the best possible outcome and prognosis

 

Wound Care & Laceration Repair

Suturing cuts or lacerations

Treating bite wounds or abscesses

Drain placements

 

Eye & Ear Procedures

Prolapsed Gland of Third Eyelid (Cherry Eye – common in brachycephalic breeds)

Entropion and Ectropion Repair (eyelid deformities) 

Ear Pinna Hematoma repair (correction of blood-filled swelling in the ear flap)

Tumor removals (eyelids and ear canals)

 

Hernia Repair

Umbilical hernias (Typically corrected during spay/neuter if present)

Inguinal hernia (common hernia in groin of older dogs)

 

Foreign body Removal

Pets sometimes swallow things they shouldn’t. We perform:

Gastrotomies (to remove foreign body from stomach)

Enterotomies  (to remove foreign body from intestines)

Intestinal Resection and Anastomosis (removal of dying intestines)

 

Orthopedic Procedures

Lateral Suture Repair (for ruptured cruciate ligaments) 

Femoral Head Ostectomy (FHO)

Patellar Wedge Resection (for luxating knee caps)

Intramedullary pin and cerclage wire fixation (for simple long bone fractures)

Limb, digit and tail amputations 

 

Speciality Surgical Procedures:

Stenotic Nares Correction and Elongated Soft palate repair (brachycephalic breeds) 

Analsaculectomy (removal of anal glands)

Perineal Urethrostomy (removal of penis in obstructed male cat)

Subtotal colectomy (removal of part of colon in constipated cats)

Thyroidectomy and parathyroidectomy (removal of thyroid and parathyroid glands)

Nephrectomy (removal of kidney)

 

Important to know

All pets undergoing surgery:

Should have pre-operative exams and bloodwork

Require general anesthesia and anesthetic monitoring

Require intravenous catheter and fluid administration

Receive pain management before, during and after surgery

Usually need an e-collar or surgical suit to protect the surgical area
